The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
