Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
