European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
