The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
